Feb 17 25 – Wirework

I am having issues with pushing forward into a new idea for my artwork. I have several things that I could work towards but none of them seem like they build upon the work that I have been doing previously.

I think that I just need to start making, this is always the issue. Unfortunately, I think I am getting bored with the practice that I have been doing. I have been stiffening textile and creating sculpture out of it for years now and I think I want to move away from that as a process. Or not move away from it, but perhaps augmented it with other crafts, like casting or metalwork. Maybe use new materials as well: latex, clay/slip, wire, metal.

Looking at the book Everyday Things: Wire has been inspiring. I enjoy the wireworks that are exhibited.

I like the craftsmanship that went into the creation of these objects. Wire can be used to make many everyday items and also much grander pieces. Combining these with fabric I think could be lead to some very interesting outcomes though I am not sure where to go with it.

Particularly like the hanging pieces, the oil lamps and the plant baskets. I am not sure why those are draw me in but they do. Making an oil lamp with a wire hanger could be something that I pursue though I am not sure how well that would come together with textile. I don’t want to make an art piece that ends in flames.

I have other books that I can look through but overall I am not sure where to go with my next piece and I think I just need to start making SOMETHING.
